HighLine Polycarbonate has just released two polycarbonate sheet grades for welding screens specified to ISO 25980. It is available as a red material and a green material. The red has a welding shade number of 4 and the green has a welding shade number of 8. It is easy to install the welding screens around large scale industrial robotic welding areas. The materials comply with the ISO 25980 standard for welding screens.
Optical properties
Firstly, ISO 25980 requires that virtually all of the light in the UV portion of the spectrum (<400nm) be removed. (Part 4.2 of the standard includes the details). Secondly, ISO 25980 limits the total transmittance in the 400nm to 1400nm part of the spectrum, which includes visible light
Other properties
The standard ISO 25980 also defines a number of additional requirements for welding screens. Our welding screens are able to meet all of these requirements. The specification includes:
- UV light reflection back to the welding area.
- UV stability of the material.
- Flame retardant properties of the material.
- Mechanical strength of the material.
Expanding upon the mechanical strength requirements, our welding screens are more than able to meet the specification due to the inherent strength of the polycarbonate. Screens made from polycarbonate are a much better choice than screens made from glass. It is easy to break glass screens in an industrial environment.
In some cases additional mechanical operations such as cutting and grinding can occur inside the welding area. These operations require increased mechanical strength to protect against high velocity debris. Therefore, we have the option to further increase the protection against debris projectiles by incorporating the welding grade polycarbonate into a ballistics laminate.
The polycarbonate welding screens also have excellent flame inhibiting properties and is resistant to ignition. The flame retardant properties are an important consideration in a welding environment.
You should not use the material for welding face masks. The material is only designed for welding screens.
We sell welding screen polycarbonate sheets in thicknesses of 1/8″ to 1/4″. We are able to produce sheets in sizes up to 80″ x 120″.
